The newest season of Fortnite is finally upon us, as Season 3 of the game’s Chapter 2 kicked off on 17 June!

‘Splash Down’ is one of the more anticipated new seasons of the popular Battle Royale game, and arrives following multiple delays.

Ahead of the new season, there was a big in-game event; excitement began building when a countdown timer appeared in the game, set to hit zero on Monday 15 June.

One of Fortnite’s more spectacular live events, ‘The Device’ set in motion a wave of changes that have made some big difference to a now soggy map.

Here’s everything you need to know:

What happened during The Device event?

During The Device event, Midas’ doomsday clock hit zero, and kicked off a chain of events that sunk the game’s map.

As the countdown ended, pillars lifted up from under the map’s existing stretches of water as an explosion blew up The Agency building.

The ‘Doomsday’ device appeared on a pedestal, as players were lifted into the air and transported to an alternate dimension office, where a character could be heard talking about storms and “the loop.”

When players were eventually sent back to the map, it was completely sunken into the sea.

Immediately after the event, the game was in a sort of limbo between The Device and the start of Season 3; players hoping to jump into a match instead found themselves on an island surrounded by a wall of water, and were promptly killed by AI-controlled Henchmen.

What’s new in Season 3?

As expected, Fortnite’s map is now a watery paradise, with entire areas altered drastically by an influx of H2O.

But it’s not just the map that has changed (more on that later); a number of new features, mechanics and items have been introduced to the game.

For one, rideable sharks now allow you to latch on and zip about the wetter areas of the map at speed. Careful though, as developers Epic Games describe the big fish as “item hungry”, so they’ll likely gobble up any dropped loot in their vicinity.

Maybe they’ll be partial to biting players too?

Pirate-style Marauders have also been added to the game, and will crash down onto the island to give you an extra challenge, similar to the Henchmen of last season.

Jason Momoa’s big-screen depiction of DC Comic hero Aquaman has also been dropped into the game.

Fortnite has previously featured comic book stars like Deadpool and Batman – complete with themed challenges – and Aquaman seems a perfect fit for the new, water-based season.

In terms of new weapons, the Ocean’s Burst Assault Rifle and Flare Gun seem to be on-theme additions, and you can now use some dual-wielding pickaxes as a single-handed version.

Then there is a host of new vehicles to pilot, including cars, trucks, and quite a few others, and of course all of the usual new skins and loot you’d expect from a major update to Fortnite!

How has the map changed?

Due to its being ‘drowned’, Fortnite’s map has changed considerably, and now there appears to be considerably less solid ground,

Players are still exploring the new iteration of the map, but fresh named locations currently include The Fortilla, Rickety Rig, The Authority, and Catty Corner.

The addition of the briny blue where once there was land will likely change the way Fortnite plays in considerable ways; fan favourite locations seem to have been flooded out entirely, or at least changed immeasurably by a load of water moving in to the neighbourhood.

Epic is inviting players to “survive more than just the storm in the aftermath of its revenge”, and “adapt to its flooded way of life.”

“Stay afloat and take on new challenges,” they say.

Locations that have ‘survived’ the flooding include Pleasant Park, Salty Springs, Frenzy Farm, Retail Row, Lazy Lake, Holly Hedges, Sweaty Sands, Lazy Lake, and Misty Meadows.

But things are likely to be much more soggy, and its likely these locations won’t appear quite as they did before.

What else is new?

Alongside the map changes and new content, the new update also brings with it bug fixes and quality of life improvements, to make your experience of playing the game just that little bit smoother.

How much is a Battle Pass?

As usual, all players will be able to enjoy Season 3 of Fortnite for free, and even partake in some of the weekly challenges, but to get the most out of it you might want to opt for a Battle Pass.

The Battle Pass once again delivers 100 tiers to progress through by completing challenges and gaining in-game experience, with loot to unlock along the way.

There will be new cosmetics to unlock, meaning you’ll be able to customise your character’s look even more.

The Battle Pass costs 950 V-Bucks (Fortnite’s in-game currency).

The cheapest pack of V-Bucks you can buy is 1,000 for £7.99.

How do I update the game?

Many gamers have their consoles set to install game updates automatically, so if you’re just now booting up your machine, it could be that you don’t need to do anything at all to jump into the latest version of Fortnite.

But for those who need to update manually, here’s a quick guide:

On Xbox One, press the Home button on your controller and select Games & Apps. From there, select Updates, and you should see a Fortnite tile appear. Select it, press the Menu button, and select Update.

PS4 players need to highlight Fortnite in the console’s main menu, press the Options button on your controller, and press Check For Updates. If there is an update, the game update will be put into your download queue and once completed, you will be informed by an on-screen message.

Nintendo Switch users should ensure their console is connected to the Internet, and from the HOME Menu, select the icon for the software you wish to update without starting the game or application. Press the + or – Button on your controller, then select Software Update followed by Via the Internet.

Of course, with Fortnite release patches and updates on a weekly business, it’s highly advised you set up automatic updates on your console of choice, to streamline your experience.

Fortnite Battle Royale – play online and on Android

Android users rejoiced in AUG of 2020 when Fortnite was finally released for Android devices. The immensely popular video game was previously only available on gaming consoles, Apple, and Windows devices. Fortnite combines crafting and construction as well as combative “last man standing” play, spanning multiple gaming genres. The game is rated for teen and above due to violence, but parents can rest assured this is not your average battle game. The gore and blood are markedly less than other games of its nature. The emphasis is not on the morbidity of killing players, but rather taking out opponents as you endeavor to be the last player “alive”. In the Battle Royale game mode, players team up, gathering supplies and weapons, constructing forts for protection. This multi-player version of the game is what sent Fortnite into video game superstardom. It is an excellent game for teens (and adults!) who are looking to interact with friends, get creative, and avoid the excessive goriness of similar games.

The most exhilarating game there is

The true value in Fortnite coming to Android is in both new users and existing players now able to battle it out on-the-go.

Fortnite is inarguably one of the most popular video games right now. First released in 2019 by Epic Games, this free online video game has taken the world by storm. It originally released two game modes: Fortnite: Save the World where users battle AI zombies, and Fortnite: Battle Royale which, as its name suggests, is a 100 player vs. player battle royale setting where everyone fights to be the last player standing. In 2018, Epic Games launched the third game mode: Fortnite: Creative, where users can construct their own worlds. Epic Games releases game enhancements quarterly, drawing players back in to check out new features. All three game modes are free to play; however Epic Games offers an upgraded “Battle Pass” where users can complete weekly challenges to unlock rewards including outfits, wraps, emotes, pets, and other flair.

The Fortnite trend is to purchase outfit and gear upgrades for your game avatar. It feels like middle school all over again, worrying about what to wear to be “cool”, only this time it’s not even for a real human! The game opens with players being dropped into the Fortnite world via a “battle bus”. It feels exactly how I imagine Hunger Games would feel. Upon landing, players rush to scoop up weapons, gear, and to either hide or begin constructing defense forts. Teammates have each other’s backs, fighting off opposing teams and working together. Users can opt to play only with other players on their same device, or along with anyone. The advantage to this choice is that those playing on a mobile version of Fortnite are at a disadvantage, as the game is better optimized for gaming console or computer play. For example, a player on an Android device has a more difficult time with controls and game navigation, so they may choose to play against other players with the same disadvantage.

The graphics for Fortnite on Android have come along since its original beta release. However, they are still inferior to that of the gaming console, computer, or iOS device graphics. As Android users are used to doing, expect that graphics will not be as high quality or representative of what you are used to when you play on a superior device. The overall navigation is more cumbersome as well. Lag is another significant issue Android users face when playing Fortnite on their tablets and mobile devices. This is especially frustrating if you are somewhat competitive and have a team you are trying to help make it to the end. Fortnite for Android users have support in the form of online FAQs and the ability to contact Epic Games directly via Fortnite’s “Help” button. All players must have an Epic Games username and password to play and are subject to their Privacy Policy.

Where can you run this program?

Fortnite for Android is available on select Samsung devices (Galaxy S9/S9+, Note 8, Galaxy S8/S8+, Galaxy S7/S7 Edge, Tab S3, Tab S4), Google Pixel devices, multiple LG devices, Razer Phone, multiple Xiaomi devices, and more. If your Android device is not supported, but has 3 GB of RAM or higher and the latest version of Android, it is still eligible. It is free to download and play.

Is there a better alternative?

Fortnite can be run on all the main platforms: Windows, MacOS, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, iOS, and now Android. Anyone playing this addictive game on a mobile device is at a slight disadvantage to a console player. This is to be expected and not exclusive to Android. When comparing mobile device platforms, the overall graphic quality is markedly better on iOS than on Android. Since the truest value of Fortnite coming to Android is just another platform to reach its user base, this is not a deal breaker. The true Fortnite fans will play on their consoles or computers most of the time, just enjoying the Android mobile version when they want to sneak in an extra challenge.

Our take

Fortnite’s lighthearted yet action packed manner makes it suitable and fun for a wide audience. Both kids and their parents alike can have fun creating worlds, teaming up, and taking on the journey together. Access to the game on Android only makes that interaction more attainable now.

Should you download it?

Yes. Big gamers have already played Fortnite the proper way on a gaming console or computer. They realize that playing Fortnite on any mobile platform (iOS or Android) is just an additional way to enjoy this great game. When approached as an “extra”, Fortnite for Android users can excuse its lower quality graphics, lag, and navigation difficulties. Definitely download this game for an extra dose of Fortnite fun. Casual gamers, without gaming consoles or the desire to play on a computer, may feel underwhelmed by the graphics quality and overwhelmed by the cumbersome operation. Go into it knowing that this is a bonus way to play a game truly optimized for console/computer play and have fun with it for what it is.

Fortnite BattlePass Chapter2 – Season3

Explore the Fortilla. Build Your Own Umbrella.New Bonuses. 1500V-Bucks Back.

Fortnite’s map has flooded. Chapter 2, Season 3 kicked off Wednesday morning with a watery bang. What was once an island is now plural—a flotilla of islands rather than just one. The lower elevations have all been submerged, and what we’re left with is something else entirely.

Season 3’s ‘Splash Down’ theme is distinctly summer-themed. Instead of spies we now have ‘Drifters’ and instead of Deadpool we now have Aquaman. For those Fortnite fans who also love Jason Momoa (aka Aquaman aka Khal Drogo), this season of Fortnite is for you.

As always, the new season comes with a new Battle Pass filled with cosmetic goodies that you can purchase for roughly $10—or the premium Battle Pass for 2800 V-Bucks. New Skins, Back Bling, Gliders and more are included. There’s even a brand-new customizable Umbrella this season. Read more about that right here.

Here’s everything you get in the Season 3 Battle Pass—but first, the trailer, narrated by Rhys Darby of Jumanji fame:
